A Clash of Narratives: National Identity and Violent Conflict in Ethiopia

This applied research report maps Ethiopia’s media ecosystem during 2020–2021, with particular attention to national and ethnic identity, the Tigray conflict, political polarization, diaspora media, and competing narrative frames.
The project analyzed 336 media items from 91 sources and used the Civic Media Observatory framework to assess themes, narrative frames, and potential civic impact. It also documents how internet shutdowns, media closures, and diaspora-based communication shaped information access and public discourse during a period of acute political crisis.
